Aysha - Take me higher (Waardering Muziekwereld) 7
Zo’n vijf jaar geleden besprak ik hier de EP ‘Stay With Me’ van deze Amerikaanse zangeres Aysha (Afrikaans voor leven). Dat was toen de opvolger van haar debuut ‘Love Is a Rock’ uit 2006. Zowel in 2009 als in 2010 werd ze genomineerd als “Jazz Artist of the Year” tijdens de Los Angeles Music Awards, terwijl het album ‘Stay With Me’ tot “Jazz album of the Year” gekroond werd. Aysha stond al op het podium met Najee, Blake Aaron, Marion Meadows, Paul Brown en Everette Harp, en stond in het voorprogramma van Greg Adams and his East Bay Soul band. Vorig jaar begon ze met een internetradioshow ‘Smooth Saturdays with Aysha’, en daarover zei ze: “I love meeting new people and getting the chance to talk to my favorite artists face to face and perform with them in this kind of intimate setting,”…. “I enjoy learning about their individual journeys and about their process of creating music that brings enjoyment to so many people. As I’ve grown myself as an artist, I appreciate the details that go into that process so much more. It’s always exciting to start writing songs and experience the hard work and joy that is part of watching a project come to fruition. I love recording and performing equally. It’s really wonderful to have the opportunity to share my music with so many people and work with such high calibre musicians and producers. To riff a little on the title, I’m glad to be able to take everyone a little higher with this new album.”
Tevens toerde ze rond met The Soul Seduction Tour. Nu is haar nieuwste release bij mij toegekomen, die opent met ‘Up So High’, een sexy smooth R&B, dat haar handelsmerk is, en waarop Lin Rountree gedempte trompet speelt. Op de up-beat titeltrack hoor je saxofonist Darren Rahn, die aan de song meeschreef en bovendien alle songs masterde. Dit is tevens de eerste radiosingle. Daarna volgt de mooie soulballade ‘Send For me’ (een cover van Atlantic Starr) waarop Tony Exum Jr. sopraansax speelt. Het duet ‘You’re the Only One’ zingt ze samen met Damon Dae, waarna de zalige cover ‘Sailing’ van Christopher cross eraan komt, met sax van Will Donato. ‘Undeniable’ is weerom een duet, maar ditmaal met Monty Seward, en sax van Eric Darius. Will Donato is nogmaals te horen op ‘The Right Thing’, waarna fluitist Najee te horen is op de up-tempo track ‘All I Want’. De eerste single was ‘Release Me’ , en dit zou oorspronkelijk de titel van het album geworden zijn, omdat Aysha net uit een moeilijke relatie stapte. Tot slot covert ze de funky track ‘Let’s Get it On’, een cover van Marvin Gaye, met sax van Darren Rahn. Aysha overstijgt hiermee de grenzen van smooth soul R&B en smooth jazz, en ik hou van haar sexy, sensuele stijl. Een dikke aanrader!
